Rome’s sights

It’s impossible not to fall in love with Rome. It evokes a storm of emotions from the moment you take your first step into its territory. A pioneer of Western civilization, to this day Rome is still home to many sites that were once considered incredible creations by man. The eternal city invites you to get up close and personal on foot through its streets, but 1 day won’t be enough time to soak up all the beauty.

Coliseum

The Colosseum is the calling card of ancient and modern Rome. Know it all over the world and cite it as one of the reasons to visit this wonderful city. The building is a kind of stadium which was created in the early years of our era.

Events were staged in its arena, often bloody and brutal. They watched gladiatorial fights, executions, tortures, exhibitions and other highly emotional events. Today it is an architectural monument, a reminder of the 5 centuries when activity never left the place.

St. Peter’s Cathedral and Piazza

In the heart of Rome lies a small state called the Vatican City. In the heart of the Vatican is St. Peter’s Square with the cathedral of the same name. It is surrounded by numerous columns, and its dimensions are 340 by 240 meters. From above the square looks like a key.

It was designed by a Baroque sculptor named Lorenzo Bernini. The church on the piazza is not only a spiritual centre for Catholics but also a repository of numerous works of art. Every year religious events, such as the Easter celebrations, are held in the area.

Vittoriano

The impressive complex on Piazza Venezia has been under construction for around 40 years. It is dedicated to King Victor Emmanuel II. He was the first monarch who was able to unite the Italian territory and turn it into a full-fledged state. The building features a sculpture of the monarch on horseback, made of bronze.

The top of the building is decorated with an architrave of 16 statues. These are the symbols of all the Italian regions. There are museums inside, as well as galleries where various exhibitions can be seen from time to time. There is a guard of honour in the square outside the complex as well as the Eternal Flame.

Roman Forum

Another impressive structure is located in the centre of the city. It used to be a place of assembly where the Romans participated in important events, shared social news and solved problems. It was also the place where decisions regarding laws, verdicts and appointments of officials were made.

The market stalls were situated near the administrative buildings. They were adjacent to temples, monuments and other buildings. After the fall of the Roman Empire the forum was devastated and only fragments of it remain.

Trevi Fountain

There are many fountains in Rome, each one impressive in its beauty. But Trevi is the leader among them. It acts as a fragment of the facade of the Palazzo Poli palace. In the heat, people come here to enjoy the mild coolness and watch the shimmering turquoise water.

The decoration is an architectural ensemble with a set of figures. It towers over a bowl that is about 20 meters long. The whole composition resembles a kind of amphitheatre, with spectators seated on the steps.
