Naples is the pizza capital. It’s said to be the tastiest pizza in the world, made according to the classic Italian principle. The city is also famous for preserving much of the atmosphere and flavour for which this delightful country is renowned. But beware, as the narrow streets are not safe all day and it is advisable to keep your belongings firmly inside. There is plenty to see in Naples, but here are the highlights.

Naples sights - Vesuvius volcano

Volcano Vesuvius

We should start with the pride of the region, Vesuvius. It is one of the most formidable volcanoes on the planet and has caused people a lot of trouble. The volcano once wiped out the entire city of Pompeii. However, its formidability only adds to its charm and beauty.

Every year, Vesuvius is visited by about 4 million people. They climb to the top to take a look both at Vesuvius and the view from the peak. The walk is done via a special trail, as the funicular was destroyed in a massive earthquake that happened about 30 years ago.

Naples sights - the city of Herculaneum

Herculaneum

In addition to Pompeii, the rampaging Vesuvius destroyed another city, Herculaneum. However, Herculaneum was somewhat more fortunate as today you can see many luxurious buildings which date back to the 17th century. Excavations are regularly carried out since much of the city is still under a pile of mud and sand.

The city beckons for tourists who want to see a piece of the former Italian grandeur that nature has destroyed. The partially preserved structures give you at least a small taste of how life was about 3,000 years ago.

Getting closer to modernity, you should visit the arcade located in the heart of the city. Here you’ll find the main shopping arcade where you can enjoy a spot of shopping. Although it dates back to the 19th century, the structure is still impressive. It is also being renovated and modernised from time to time.

Today the arcade houses a large number of boutiques of various classes. The complex of covered streets allows for comfortable strolling even when the weather is totally disgusting.

Naples sights - St Januarius Cathedral

St. John’s Cathedral

The temple rivals many other Italian cathedrals, including those in Florence and Milan. Although it is more compact in size, it is just as beautiful. Perugino and Luca Giordano are its main decoration.

On top is an ancient shrine in the form of a vessel containing the blood of St. Januarius. It can be seen only twice a year when it becomes liquid (so it is in a frozen state).

Naples sights - Castel Sant'Elmo

Castel Sant’Elmo

The castle is a fortress that dates back to the 14th century. It is located on the highest point of the city, or more precisely, on the top of the mountain called Vomero.

In the seventeenth century it was decided to build a prison within the fortress due to its strength and security. Today there is an observation deck that offers a marvellous view of Vesuvius, the port and the historic centre of Naples. It is accessible by funicular railway.
